PROMOTING BIKES
By : Archana Lama

It is the usual chaotic traffic jam scenario on the roads. Just then A biker speeds through the heavy traffic taking risky maneuvers and disappears in the hustle bustle of the traffic confusion, leaving only smoke behind. At another instance one of the pedestrians who usually cross the road from unsafe road zones remarks,These hooligan bikers are a threat to the roads.' Then another uncle on a Pajero who usually parks his vehicle anywhere on the roads exclaims,These spoilt brats need too be taught riding lessons.' Next the ignorant bus driver who every time stops his bus suddenly anywhere on sight of a passenger, shouting out, These careless bikers better bee hit with our buses.' Thus just because of a few careless bikers, the whole biking community is stated as a threat in the society, by equally irresponsible people. Naturally this misconception is tagged along to the real bikers too. But real bikers are those responsible people who have a passion for bikes, addiction for riding and are there to promote safety but not a threat. This safe riding ethics and protection of the real bikers, is what the only online active biking portal of Nepal www.merobike.com has been promoting through their discussions in their forum ever since the site kicked off.

Merobike.com started off in the year 2005 when two like minded bike enthusiasts Nick Ghale and Prabin Silwal decided to establish the site. As the name merobike itself suggests, the site is all about the biker and his bike. Though the sites visual looks still needs to be updated, its forum must be one of the most active online forums in Nepal. This site has everything that anybody would like to know about bikes, bikers and biking. Talk about the bike technology or be it the existing and latest bikes, these guys are probably the best in town who can give you the full fledged reviews.

This site has varied discussions ranging from bikes in Nepal, superbikes, bike technology, motorsport, motorcycle stunting, bike modification to even the traffic system. In the modification discussion section members deal with current issues like ban on bike modification and discuss why bike modification cannot be blamed as the sole cause of accidents. Actually the discussions on the Traffic system that take place in the forum are very interesting. Members share stories like, the traffic police considering bribes in the form of demand for little hard cash, mobile recharge cards, or even buckets in a few rare cases, rather than charging the actual fine. At another instance a member even shared a story of spotting a superbike owner being led to the traffic police office in charge of riding a modified bike. Talking about being practical, the website has even organized a few bikers get together's and group long rides where every time at least thirty to fifty bikes manage to show up. Thus over the years of its functioning this site is heading towards becoming an ever expanding "store-house" of information on bikes and biking in the country. It is gradually gaining popularity among the teenagers of today who are enthusiastic about bikes, stunting, modification, touring, group formations, etc.

Merobike.com has thus created an environment for freely raising the voice of a biker seeking the interest of other bikers in the country. The members even claim that this site is the best place for them to be when they are not their bikes...
